Lobsters are gross. Until the early 1900s lobsters were fed to dogs, prisoners, and the poor. These “cockroaches of the sea” were regarded as trash, literally mixed with manure and spread on fields as cheap fertilizer.
Nevermind, lobsters are amazing. Eventually, the culinary world came to a better understanding of how to prepare, present, and enjoy these creepy little animals and - Ta Da! - now Lobster appears on fine dining menus. The problem was never with lobsters, but with the way we prepared them.
The Confirmation Lobster. Similarly, for generations, we have been handing on bad recipes for Confirmation formation. Catechetically and culturally we have been misunderstanding and under-appreciating the beauty and power of this sacrament.
If we better prepare catechists, parents, sponsors, and young people to understand this sacrament and see the value that is being offered, Confirmation becomes spectacular… and delicious with butter.
A few Talking Points from Confirmation Lobster
Value Proposition: Through Confirmation the Holy Spirit prepares us and equips us to face the challenges in life that academics, athletics, and extra curriculars don’t .
A False Decision Point: Confirmation is not the sacrament when a person chooses to be Catholic for the rest of their lives. Confirmation is about being equipped to answer the challenge we received at Baptism. However, we do make an adult decision and choose the faith each time we come into Communion with the Church by saying “Amen” to the Eucharist.
